The ‘terroir’ of Château Berthenon is highly influenced by the proximity of the Gironde Estuary and the Ocean. This micro climate allows our grapes to reach their optimum ripeness. Our soils are the result of ancient history : sediments deposited by the Ocean millions of years ago make up the limestone base now covered by blue clays, favoring the aromatic expression of our wines. Planted principally by Henri PONZ, our oldest vines are over 50 years old. We use sustainable agricultural methods of cultivation, respecting the vines and allowing them to express the quality of our ‘terroir’ For the red wines we use :
Merlot (70 %) : Giving colour, fruit, and roundness, with fine, elegant tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon (27 %) : With intense colour, giving flowery character and spiciness. The powerful tannins guarantee a complex bouquet after several years of bottle age. Petit Verdot (3%): A grape variety that gives intense colour. With maturity the tannins are silky and give lovely spicy notes. For the white wines we use : * Sauvignon Blanc, a golden colour, allows the extraction of intense citrus aromas, yellow fruits and giving great freshness to the wines. |
